Don't categorize him as just a rhythm player. Sure, he can lay down a rockin, funkin, swingin, jazzin groove when he wants to. But Dean has taken the electric bass guitar to a new level, coaxing complete orchestrations from four strings that seem completely at ease in their role as a solo instrument. When Dean plays a solo gig, you may not recognize all the sounds you hear, but they all come from one bass, with no overdubs, and no synthesizers. The effect is timeless, virtuosic, and defies classification. Yet, we feel a sense of recognition – that he has, indeed, found a way to describe our world through his music.
